Gadgets Galore! Program

With the holiday season approaching many people are looking at electronic gadgets as gift ideas.  The Fond du Lac Public Library will host a program on Tuesday, November 10 from 6-8 pm in the lower level McLane Room that will demonstrate this year’s hottest gadgets from e-readers and I pods, to digital cameras, GPS systems, and more.  There will be a question and answer session at the end of the program for people to get more information.  Registration is not required.

Wall of Memory on Display at Library

As a tribute to the upcoming Veterans Day holiday, a “Wall of Memory” featuring the names of over 1,000 Fond du Lac County soldiers who lost their lives during the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, on the U.S.S. Liberty, U.S.S. Cole, and Operation Iraqi Freedom will be on display at the Fond du Lac Public Library from November 7-20.  The exhibit will be located on the first floor near the Help Desk.   The display was initiated by the South Shore Chorale.

Celebrate National Gaming Day

Game on!  The Fond du Lac Public Library will join the American Library Association to celebrate the second annual National Gaming Day @ your library on Saturday, November 14, from 11 am to 3:30 pm in the lower level McLane Room.  Families and children of all ages are invited to drop in and have fun playing a variety of video and board games.  No registration needed. Free!  The library is celebrating the popularity of games as well as the recreational and educational value of play.  Gaming also teaches leadership, problem-solving, and team-building skills.  A recent Pew/Internet study found that social gaming that occurs in person in the same room encourages civic engagement among teenagers and helps them become invested in their community.

The library is a changing and dynamic place and is continuously offering free innovative programs and services that educate, entertain and expand interaction with users.  Historically, the library is well known as a key provider of print resources.  With new digital formats such as downloadable audio and video games, libraries continue to create and promote modern educational opportunities for their users.  They play a valuable role in providing a social gaming experience not found elsewhere in the community in a safe, non-commercialized space.

Seven Financial Habits of Happy & Healthy People

We are living in turbulent times that affect both our health and well being.  The public is invited to join Andrew Pevonka of Northwestern Mutual who will discuss how you can take control of your finances for a happier and healthier life.  Topics include creating a financial plan, taking steps to protect family from financial misfortune, managing credit cards, and spending within your budget.  This free program will be offered at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Monday, November 16 from 6-7 pm in the lower level McLane Room.  Registration is not required.

Bilingual Storytime Offered

A preschool bilingual storytime will be offered at the library on Saturday, November 21 from 11 a.m. to noon in the lower level McLane Meeting Room.  Stories about Thanksgiving Day will be read in English and Spanish.  Children will also have fun creating a turkey ornament from a dried gourd to take home.  Preschoolers need to bring an adult.  No registration needed.  For more information call 929-7080, ext. 127.

Official Veterans Day Web Site -- http://www1.va.gov/opa/vetsday/ -- On November 11, 1921, ceremonies in the United States, England, and France marked the burials in each country of an unknown soldier killed during World War I, which ended at 11 a.m. on November 11, 1918.  The date became known as “Armistice Day.”  In 1926, the United States Congress passed a resolution making the name official; “Armistice Day” became a national holiday in 1938.  In 1947, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks organized the first celebration using the name “Veterans Day” in Birmingham, Alabama, to honor all American veterans.   In 1954, President Eisenhower signed a bill officially proclaiming November 11 as Veterans Day.  This web site provides additional information about Veterans Day, along with suggestions for observing the date, a Teachers Resource Guide with links to a 38-page school kit, Veterans Day posters, a Patriotic Fact Sheet, children’s activities, and other resources.

SHOP THE BOOKCELLAR FOR GREAT BARGAINS!

Shop the BOOKCELLAR, the used bookstore operated by the Friends of the Fond du Lac Public Library for great bargains.  The store is open on Mondays, November 16 and December 7 from Noon to 6 pm.   The store is located on the lower level of the library at 32 Sheboygan Street. 

The BOOKCELLAR has a huge selection of inventory including adult and children’s hardcover and paperback books.  Money raised from the sale goes back to support the library.

Great Decisions: Vote for Your Favorites

FDLPL has participated in the Foreign Policy Association Great Decisions discussion series for the past 15 years. We will be changing the format somewhat for 2010 by presenting four programs instead of the usual eight. For the first time ever we are offering our audience the chance to vote on the discussion topics they would most like us to present.

Discussions will be held at the library every Tuesday in February at 7:00 p.m. Whether you are a long time follower of Great Decisions or perhaps may join us for the first time, go to our homepage and click on Survey: Great Decisions at the bottom of the homepage. PumpkinFest Coming Soon!

Children ages 5-10 years old are invited to attend a free PumpkinFest program at the library on Saturday, October 17.  Children will have a choice of attending the 11 am, or the 1:30 program.   Programs are about an hour in length.

Children will learn how pumpkins grow, make a pumpkin ornament; decorate a real mini pumpkin and a pumpkin shaped cookie.  There will also be a display of several different kinds of pumpkins.  The program is sponsored by the library and the Green Thumb Garden Club. 

Registration is required in advance and begins October 1^st.  Call 929-7080, ext. 127, or register online via the library’s calendar at www.FDLPL.org  Space is limited.  Preschoolers need to bring an adult.

Halloween Storytime

Families are invited to attend a free Halloween program at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Sunday, October 4 from 1:00 – 1:45 pm.  Children will be entertained with Halloween stories and songs.  They will also make a Halloween House.  No registration is necessary.  Preschoolers need to bring an adult.  For more information, call 929-7080, ext. 127.

Libraries to Offer Programs for Job-seekers

The Winnefox Library System, along with public libraries in Fond du Lac, Green Lake, Marquette, Waushara, & Winnebago counties, is sponsoring a series of programs aimed at helping people develop job search skills. 

Sessions will be offered in 15 area libraries in October and November.  Each program lasts three hours.    There is no cost to attend, however registration is required.

Shoo the Flu! & Pneumonia Too Public Clinic at FDLPL

The Aurora Visiting Nurse Association will offer flu and pneumonia immunizations at the library on Monday, October 5 from 10 am – 2 pm.  Flu shots are $30 and pneumonia shots are $45.  Medicare Part B, Medicare replacement plans and Medicaid (T-19, Badger Care) are accepted for flu and pneumonia shots.  Participants must be 9 years and older to receive a vaccination.  A parent or guardian must be present with any child under the age of 18.

FDLPL Celebrates Money Smart Week, Oct. 10-17

Money Smart Week in Wisconsin, held October 10-17, is an initiative coordinated by many businesses in Fond du Lac.  The purpose of the event is to provide outlets for sharing financial literacy information.  During this week there will be free financial programs presented at locations throughout FDL County. 

On Saturday, October 10 from 10 am until 3 pm children of all ages are invited to Family Moolah Fun Day at the library.  Join in the fun with Penny the Pig, Ben Franklin, a Treasure Hunt, Moolah Bingo, and more!

New this year for grades K-5 is Moolah Matters, a questionnaire for kids to complete. Questionnaires are available at the library.  The deadline for submitting the completed entries is September 30.  All completed entries will receive a coupon for a free ice cream cone at McDonald’s.  There will also be other prizes awarded to the ten best entries.  For more information and a complete list of programs visit the library’s website at www.FDLPL.org

Help for Unemployed at FDLPL

Two full time VISTA volunteers have joined the staff of the Fond du Lac Public Library to help connect the unemployed in Fond du Lac County to state and local programs assisting with recovery. Programs range from training and job searching to support groups. Many programs already exist in the community such as those offered by Moraine Park Technical College and the Fond du Lac Job Center. Where capacity is insufficient to meet demand, the VISTA volunteers will help to set up additional programs in any of the six public libraries in Fond du Lac County.

Assistance may include classes on basic computer use, online employment resources, interview techniques, and other services that may be of help to the unemployed.  One project the VISTA volunteers are currently working on is finding staff to open the library’s Computer Training Lab on evenings and weekends to anyone needing to use a computer as part of a job search or to apply for a job. Users of the public computers in the library are currently limited to one hour because of high demand. Having a special computer room for job seekers would give them the added time they need to complete applications or perform job related training.

VISTA – Volunteers in Service to America – is often referred to as the domestic Peace Corp.  Volunteers are usually recent college graduates who devote a year or more of their lives helping to improve the quality of life in communities. A prime objective of the volunteers is to ensure that any programs they help build will remain in place once their year of service is complete.

The volunteers, Sara Byrnes (pictured right), and Josh Cowles (shown left), are headquartered on the second floor of the library in the newly created Opportunity Center.  During their first two weeks at the library they have been researching services in our community that may be used to help the unemployed. They have already applied for a Library Services and Technology Act grant to obtain a mobile computer lab that will bring training to the rural areas of Fond du Lac County.

Register Now for Preschool Storytime

Register now for preschool storytime at the Fond du Lac Public Library.   Storytimes meet in the Children’s Room once a week for five weeks from September 8 through October 8.  Listening to a story read aloud provides countless benefits to preschoolers.   It introduces the children to new words and experiences that will contribute to their success when they learn to read.  More importantly, it exposes listeners to the enjoyment that can be experienced from reading and exercises their imaginations.

The following storytime programs include stories, fingerplays, flannel board stories and songs.  To register, or for more information, please call the Children’s Room at 929-7080, ext. 127, or register online at www.FDLPL.org.

Laptime Storytime is for children 12-23 months old accompanied by an adult.  No siblings please.  The session is held on Thursday from 10 am- 10:20 am.

2 X 2 Storytime is for two year olds accompanied by an adult.  Programs meet on Tuesday or Wednesday at 9:30-9:50 am.

Little Listeners is for children age 3, 4, and pre-K 5 years old.  Children may attend these programs without an adult.  Sessions are offered on Tuesday or Wednesday at 10:30 – 11:00 am.

Story Stars programs are for children age 3, 4 and pre-K 5 years old who are unable to attend the regular daytime sessions.  Storytimes are held on Wednesdays from 6:30 -7:00 pm.  Children may attend without an adult.

Storytime Sunday will be held from 1:30 -2:15 pm on the first Sunday of the month on October 4, November 1, and December 6.  Families are invited to attend these fun storytime and craft programs.  No preregistration is necessary.  Preschoolers need to bring an adult.

Preserving the Harvest Program

Your garden will soon be overflowing with juicy ripe tomatoes. The farmer’s market and stores are offering crates of fresh fruits and veggies. Learn how you can capture some of nature’s fresh bounty to enjoy all year round. The Joys of Pickling & Canning will be offered in the library's lower level meeting room on Wednesday, September 2, from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. The program is free. No registration is required. The public is invited to the library on Monday, September 21 at Noon for a free lunch and presentation on how ReferenceUSA can be utilized as a job searching tool.  ReferenceUSA is an Internet based database that provides in-depth information on more than 14 million U.S. potential employers nationwide.  Sara Emanuel, a ReferenceUSA representative, will be glad to answer your questions about researching all phases of your job search.  ReferenceUSA can be accessed free through the library’s website at www.FDLPL.org

Exhibit Features Art from Four Generations of Sleder Family

A new art exhibit titled Strokes through Generations is currently on display in the library's Langdon Divers Community Gallery and will run through September 30th. The show features painting, drawing, and sculpture created by four generations of the Sleder family. The artists include Richard Sleder, Sr. of Fond du Lac; Richard Sleder of Madison, Mary Sleder, deceased mother of Richard Sr., and Anastasia Sleder, daughter of Richard. Richard started painting in watercolors and oils in his twenties and has studied art at UW-Madison and the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. His daughter Anastasia received her art training in the historic Kolomna artists’ district in St. Petersburg. Mary (Trnka) Sleder, grandmother to Richard, had a talent for painting that got pushed aside while raising a family. She became inspired again at the age of 87 and spent the last year of her life painting small watercolor paintings. “My grandmother’s interest in art and most importantly her encouragement helped the proceeding three generations of her family pursue their own talent, “commented Richard. “My father, Richard Sr., does not have any formal art training but after retirement has renewed his interest in painting. My hope is that this exhibit will illustrate the story of how art brought four generations of family together, when we were worlds apart, and as a result added a great deal of richness to our lives, “ added Richard. Treasure Hunt Featured at Library during Fondue Fest

A Family Treasure Hunt will be held at the Fond du Lac Public Library from 9 am to 3:30 pm on Saturday, September 12^th as part of the Annual Downtown Fondue Fest.  Participants will be challenged to find clues in the Children’s Room.  Kids who locate all of the clues and solve the puzzle may choose a special prize from the library’s treasure chest.  Winnie the Fox, the mascot of the Winnefox Library System will also be on hand to pass out treats.  Children may also receive a removable tattoo. 

Join the POP Right In! Book Club

Children ages 9-12 are invited to share the books they love to read by joining the Pop Right In! Book Club at the library.  The group meets once a month after school.  Yummy snacks are provided.  Registration is required by calling the Children’s Room at 929-7080, ext. 127.

Learn more about the Eifel area in Germany where many Fond du Lac County “Holyland” ancestors lived.  In the 19^th century many German-speaking Catholics from small farming villages in the Eifel area of what was then Rhenish Prussia immigrated to east central Wisconsin.  Find out what this area in Germany is like today and discover why those immigrants came to the “Holyland” area.  No registration necessary.  Free and open to the public.  For more information call 929-7080.

Karl-Josef Tonner is a specialist in genealogy from the Eifel area and has written a number of books on this topic. He hopes to help people from the Fond du Lac area make connec­tions to their ancestry and learn their stories.

Hermann Lehmann is the chairman of the local museum in Adenau Germany.

Arnhild Wöste is a teacher from Warburg, who has often traveled to Wisconsin and has assisted families in making connections to their German ancestors.

Join the Summer Reading Program!

Be Creative@ the Fond du Lac Public Library & Bookmobiles

• Children ages 3 - 12 are invited to join the Be Creative@ Your Library reading club at the Fond du Lac Public Library and on the Bookmobiles.  The program begins June 15 through August 28.  Readers will be rewarded with a bag of prizes when they complete their reading records.  There will also be contests for kids to enter throughout the summer.

• Special programs for kids of all ages will be held on Mondays at the library throughout the summer:

·        Summer Lunch Bunch for ages 6-12 will be held on Wednesdays from 11:30-12:30 pm, June 24 – July 29.  Each week kids will enjoy stories, fun and games.  Children should bring a bag lunch.  Beverage will be provided.

·        Imagine That! Preschool Storytime for ages 2-5 will be held on Thursdays from 10:00-10:30 am, June 25 – July 30.  Registration is not required.  The program will feature books, flannel board stories, finger rhymes and music.

“I’m in the Moood to Read”  Key to Fun and Prizes for Adults

Readers who participate in the adult library program this summer at the Fond du Lac Public Library will be in for fun and surprises.  “I’m in the Moood to Read” is the theme for 2009.  Participants also have an opportunity to win prizes, including gift certificates, books, book bags, and other special items.

The program will run from June 15-August 8th.  Registration will begin Monday, June 15^th.  Participants must be 18 years of age and may register in person at the Circulation Desk at the library, on the bookmobiles, or online at www.fdlpl.org.  Registrants will receive a packet with 7 tickets – one for each week of the program.  Read at least 20 minutes each day and check a box on your entry.  Return your completed entry by email or in person at the library for weekly prize drawings.  Weekly drawings will be held each Wednesday, beginning July 1st.  On Wednesday, August 12th, there will be a grand prize drawing with $40.00 Association of Commerce gift certificates awarded to two lucky readers.

Participants may read whatever they like – bestsellers, romances, mysteries, Westerns, biography or history.  Books, magazines, and newspapers are eligible formats.  You can even listen to books on tape or CD.  Reading to your children or grandkids also qualifies for prizes.

Exhibit of Portraits by Chuck Wydevan at FDL Public Library

A new exhibit titled, Some People that I Know….And a Few that I Don’t, will open at the Fond du Lac Public Library, Langdon Divers Community Gallery, on June 30^th and will run through July 31^st.  Portrait artist Chuck Wydeven created the works.  A public reception to meet the artist will be held on Wednesday, July 8^th, from 6-8 pm.

Wydevan received a degree in art education from UW-Oshkosh and currently teaches art at FACES.  Prior to that he worked at the Minneapolis Art Institute. He also works as a free-lance portrait artist.  Chuck has taught art with The Young Artists Workshop which is a program for physically and developmentally disabled teens.  He also teaches LEAPS and College for Kids through the Department of Continuing Education, UW-Fond du Lac.  Chuck lives in Fond du Lac with his wife Leslie and two sons.

Entries Sought for Fifth Annual Flower Show Contest

Show off your garden and enter the Fifth Annual In the Good Old Summertime Flower Show Contest at the library on Friday and Saturday, July 10 -11. Entry forms are available in the library or online. Forms are due at the library on June 27. The program is co-sponsored by the library and the Green Thumb Garden Club of Fond du Lac.

People may enter several categories including a floral arrangement, an arrangement using only leaves, or an arrangement in a unique container. All entries must be created from fresh plant materials grown by the exhibitor. The show will be judged and prizes awarded. There will also be a horticulture entry to display a favorite hosta, daylily, or cone flower.

A People’s Choice Award will be presented to the arrangement with the most votes cast by the public. For more information call Sandy Smet at (920) 923-6085.

Be Creative@ the Fond du Lac Public Library & Bookmobiles

• Children ages 3 - 12 are invited to join the Be Creative@ Your Library reading club at the Fond du Lac Public Library and on the Bookmobiles.  The program begins June 15 through August 28.  Readers will be rewarded with a bag of prizes when they complete their reading records.  There will also be contests for kids to enter throughout the summer.

• Special programs for kids of all ages will be held on Mondays at the library throughout the summer:

Free tickets are required and may be picked up at the library beginning the Tuesday before each event.

·         Kids Get Crafty Night for ages 5-12 will be held on Wednesday evenings at the library from 6:30-7:15 pm, June 24-July 29.  This weekly drop-in program features stories and a craft. 

·        Summer Lunch Bunch for ages 6-12 will be held on Wednesdays from 11:30-12:30 pm, June 24 – July 29.  Each week kids will enjoy stories, fun and games.  Children should bring a bag lunch.  Beverage will be provided.

·        Imagine That! Preschool Storytime for ages 2-5 will be held on Thursdays from 10:00-10:30 am, June 25 – July 30.  Registration is not required.  The program will feature books, flannel board stories, finger rhymes and music.

Two year olds must be accompanied by an adult.

·        Artsy-Smartsie Workshops for ages 8-12 will be held on Thursdays, July 9 – July 30 from 1:00 – 2:00 pm.  Each week will feature a different artist who will demonstrate a different type of art and encourage kids to be creative.  Advance registration is required.  Cosponsored with the FDL Artists’ Association.

Bookmobile Programs

BUSES TO BOOKS – Children and Teens ages 6-17 can ride the City of Fond du Lac buses to the library and home again FREE on Thursdays from June 11-August 20 by showing their library card.  Ages 6-9 must be accompanied by an adult.

“I’m in the Moood to Read”  Key to Fun and Prizes for Adults

Readers who participate in the adult library program this summer at the Fond du Lac Public Library will be in for fun and surprises.  “I’m in the Moood to Read” is the theme for 2009.  Participants also have an opportunity to win prizes, including gift certificates, books, book bags, and other special items.

The program will run from June 15-August 8th.  Registration will begin Monday, June 15^th.  Participants must be 18 years of age and may register in person at the Circulation Desk at the library, on the bookmobiles, or online at www.fdlpl.org.  Registrants will receive a packet with 7 tickets – one for each week of the program.  Read at least 20 minutes each day and check a box on your entry.  Return your completed entry by email or in person at the library for weekly prize drawings.  Weekly drawings will be held each Wednesday, beginning July 1st.  On Wednesday, August 12th, there will be a grand prize drawing with $40.00 Association of Commerce gift certificates awarded to two lucky readers.

Participants may read whatever they like – bestsellers, romances, mysteries, Westerns, biography or history.  Books, magazines, and newspapers are eligible formats.  You can even listen to books on tape or CD.  Reading to your children or grandkids also qualifies for prizes.

Entries Sought for Fifth Annual Flower Show Contest

Show off your garden and enter the Fifth Annual In the Good Old Summertime Flower Show Contest at the library on Friday and Saturday, July 10 -11. Entry forms are available in the library or online. Forms are due at the library on June 27. The program is co-sponsored by the library and the Green Thumb Garden Club of Fond du Lac.

People may enter several categories including a floral arrangement, an arrangement using only leaves, or an arrangement in a unique container. All entries must be created from fresh plant materials grown by the exhibitor. The show will be judged and prizes awarded. There will also be a horticulture entry to display a favorite hosta, daylily, or cone flower.

A People’s Choice Award will be presented to the arrangement with the most votes cast by the public. For more information call Sandy Smet at (920) 923-6085.

PlayTots Program Offered

PlayTots, a weekly program for children newborn through 24 months is offered in the Children’s Room at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Friday mornings from 9 am to noon, and on Monday evenings from 6-7 pm.  Children need to be accompanied by a parent or caregiver.  No registration is necessary.  Participants are encouraged to drop in at their convenience.  The program provides unstructured free play and socializing for children.  Play is an important part of child development and stimulates imagination, problem solving, and cooperation skills.  The program also gives caregivers a chance to relax and visit with each other.

Five themes are rotated during the weekly programs, Shapes, Colors, Music, Construction, and Animals.    Toys, books, music and parenting materials are available at each session.

FISHING FOR LAUGHS!

Families are invited to attend the program, “Fishing for Laughs,” presented by Curt “The Bassmeister” Strutz in the lower level meeting room at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Thursday, April 23 at 6:30 pm.  Kids will learn fishing basics and participate in demonstrations on stage.  “Fishing for Laughs” is a fun, educational, and entertaining show that all ages will enjoy.  Free.  No registration is necessary

Extraordinary Sisters Program at the Library

Sister Margaret Lorimer will be the featured speaker at the Friends of the Fond du Lac Public Library Annual Meeting on Wednesday, April 29, at 6:30 pm in the library’s lower level McLane Room.   For generations the Sisters of St. Agnes have played an important role in education, health care and social justice in Fond du Lac.  Sister Margaret Lorimer, author of Ordinary Sisters: the story of the Sisters of St. Agnes 1858-1990, will discuss the origin of the Sisters, their mission, and the various roles they have played in the Fond du Lac community.  Sister Margaret Lorimer is a professor emerita of Marian College.  The program is free and open to the public.  No registration is required. 

Culver’s Celebrates Reading at FDL Public Library

Children ages 11 and under are encouraged to get creative and participate in the Culver’s restaurant reading and drawing program to celebrate National Library Week, April 12-18.  Kids can pick up drawing sheets in the Children’s Room at the Fond du Lac Public Library and on the bookmobiles anytime during the month of April.  Children will be asked to draw a picture of a character, scene, or event from a book they have read.  All participants will receive a coupon for free custard from Culver’s Frozen Custard Restaurants when they return their drawing sheet to the library.

The program is sponsored by Culver’s, and the Wisconsin Library Association Foundation.

Teddy Bear Sleepover at FDL Public Library

Children ages 2-10 years old are invited to participate in a Teddy Bear Sleepover at the Fond du Lac Public Library.  Kids will drop off their favorite teddy bear or stuffed toy for a sleepover in the Children’s Room on Friday, May 1, anytime between 3:30 – 5:00 pm.  On Saturday, May 2, children are invited back to the library at 9:00 am to enjoy a light breakfast and a storytime.  A report, complete with photos will be presented on how the teddy bears spent their evening at the library.  There will also be a special surprise for everyone.  An adult must accompany preschool children.  Preregistration is required by calling 929-7080, ext. 127; or register online via the library’s calendar at www.FDLPL.org

Windhover Hosts Reading from A Call to Nursing

On Thursday, May 7, the Windhover Center for the Arts at 51 Sheboygan Street, Fond du Lac, will feature a reading to celebrate National Nurses Week and A Call to Nursing, a new anthology from Kaplan Publishing. The reading begins at 7 pm and features three contributors to the book.

Paula Sergi of Fond du Lac, is co-editor of A Call to Nursing, Meditations on Hope and Boomer Girls. Her poetry appears in such journals as The Bellevue Literary Review, Primavera, Crab Orchard Review, The American Journal of Nursing and Spoon River Poetry Review.   

Kathryn Gahl’s stories and poems appear in numerous journals, including the American Journal of Nursing, Drumvoices Review, Notre Dame Review and Permafrost. She has traveled widely working as waitress, tour guide, editorial assistant, staff nurse, camp nurse columnist, teacher and Director of Womens’ and Children’s Services. Now she writes.

Jenna Rindo worked as a nurse in pediatric special care for seven years at hospitals in Virginia, Florida and Wisconsin. Currently she teaches English to Arabic, Hmong and Spanish students and has a Master’s in Reading Education. Her poems and essays have appeared in Frontiers, A Journal of Women Studies, Kaliope, Ars Medica, and Chest: A journal for specialists in Pulmonology Care.

Special guest Margaret Freund, a nursing student from Marian University, will be on hand to read selections from A Call to Nursing written from the student nurse perspective.

FOOD FOR FINES DRIVE AT FDL PUBLIC LIBRARY DURING

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK

In conjunction with National Library Week, the Fond du Lac Public Library will run its fourth annual “Food for Fines” drive from Saturday, April 11 through Saturday, April 18.  During this time library users can donate non-perishable food items and have their overdue fines waived.  One food item will equal $1.00 in fines, with a limit of $20.00 in fines waived per cardholder.  Fees for lost or damaged materials will not be waived under this program and accounts placed with a collection agency are not eligible for the program.

Canned, boxed, or pre-packaged non-perishable goods that are unopened are acceptable.  No glass containers or expired food items will be accepted.  Food items will be collected at the Library’s Circulation Desk or on the bookmobiles.  All items collected will be given to a local food pantry, which always needs restocking at this time of year.

“This program provides a win-win situation for the library and our customers,” stated Cheryl Bornemann, Coordinator of Support Services.  “The library benefits by getting back long overdue and lost materials, as well as customers that we haven’t seen for sometime.  But more importantly, everybody has a chance to do a good deed by donating food for the hungry.”

FDL Public Library After Hours Event Unveils Green Neighborhood

The public is invited to attend the FDL Public Library After Hours Event on Friday, April 24 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm to unveil the library’s new Green Neighborhood collection. The library will close for business as usual at 6:00 pm and the open house will begin immediately thereafter.  The program is free and is sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

The new Green Neighborhood collection features a variety of resources intended to assist those interested in living green through eco friendly, sustainable living choices.  The open house will feature local sustainability produced foods.   Dean Malloy from the Enlightened Kitchen of Fond du Lac, will provide a sampling of his organic artisan breads.  Organic spreads and cheese will be provided by Caprine Supreme Goat Dairy from Black Creek, and Makes Scents from Shiocton.  Samples of organic, biodynamic and local wine will be provided by Cujak’s Wine Market of Fond du lac.  Fair trade coffee will also be served.  Live entertainment will feature Jazz music by Mark Plummer. Mary Rehwald and Irene Blakeley, public officials from the Chequamegon Bay area, will give a brief overview of their experiences creating sustainable communities in Ashland and Bayfield.

The open house is funded by the Friends of the Library and a UW-Extension Program Innovation Grant. The program is both an unveiling of the new Green Neighborhood at the library and an introduction to a Green Neighborhood Fair to be held at the UW-FDL Campus the next day, Saturday, April 25  from 9 a.m. until noon. At the fair, a sustainability wiki site for FDL County will go live.  Both the open house and the fair are free and open to all.

Upcoming FDL Reads Programs……

Art of Weaving Program

Curious about weaving?  This is the perfect event to attend to see if you might like this marvelous art form and hobby.  Learn all about spinning and weaving from Sara von Tresckow, owner of the Woolgatherers Ltd. LCC, located in Downtown Fond du Lac.  The program will take place in the lower level meeting room of the Fond du Lac Public Library on Saturday, March 28, from 10:00 am – Noon.  Sara has nearly 30 years experience as a weaver and spinner and has presented workshops nationwide.  Participants will have the opportunity to see the DutchMaster Travel loom in action which is produced by Sara and her husband, Hans.  No registration needed to attend this free program.

Trace the Genealogy of Your Home

The Fond du Lac Public Library will sponsor a free workshop on tracing the genealogy of your home in the lower level meeting room on Monday, March 30, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Have you ever wondered about the history of your home?  When it was built?  Who owned it?  What happened to the people who lived there?  Learning about your home and property can be a fascinating and fulfilling project.  FDLPL librarians will tell you everything you need to know to get started with your research.  Who knows what secrets you may uncover?  No registration is required.

Great Decisions 2009

The Great Decisions Foreign Policy Discussion Series is free and open to the public.  The programs are held weekly in the lower level McLane Meeting Room at the library on Tuesdays from 7 pm until 8:30 pm.

Children ages 11 and under are encouraged to get creative and participate in the Culver’s restaurant reading and drawing program to celebrate National Library Week, April 12-18.  Kids can pick up drawing sheets in the Children’s Room at the Fond du Lac Public Library and on the bookmobiles anytime during the month of April.  Children will be asked to draw a picture of a character, scene, or event from a book they have read.  All participants will receive a coupon for free custard from Culver’s Frozen Custard Restaurants when they return their drawing sheet to the library.

The program is sponsored by Culver’s, and the Wisconsin Library Association Foundation.

Eggs-citing Tales Program at FDL Public Library

Children of all ages are invited to attend the “Eggs-citing Tales” program at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Sunday, April 5 from 1:30 – 2:15 pm.  Registration is not required.  Children will listen to stories and help decorate the library’s Easter Egg Tree.  Children will also make an Easter Egg Wreath to take home.  Preschoolers need to bring an adult.

Turkey Talk with Brian Lovett

Learn the basics of turkey calling with Brian Lovett, author of Hunting Pressured Turkeys, at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Thursday, April 2 at 6:30 pm.  This free program is open to the public and will be held in the lower level McLane Meeting Room. 

Lovett has chased gobblers for more than a decade.  He has hunted in 16 states and Mexico, and has bagged several grand slams and a royal slam.  He is a former outdoors reporter for The Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper.

Basic Computer and Internet Classes at FDL Public Library

No experience necessary!  These free computer classes are designed for the beginner.  The Fond du Lac Public Library will offer sessions on the basics of using a computer, as well as introductions to Microsoft Vista, Microsoft Word 2007; and the Internet.  Classes will be held in the Mid-States Training Room on the lower level of the library. Classes are approximately an hour and a half in length.

FOOD FOR FINES DRIVE AT FDL PUBLIC LIBRARY DURING

NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK

In conjunction with National Library Week, the Fond du Lac Public Library will run its fourth annual “Food for Fines” drive from Saturday, April 11 through Saturday, April 18.  During this time library users can donate non-perishable food items and have their overdue fines waived.  One food item will equal $1.00 in fines, with a limit of $20.00 in fines waived per cardholder.  Fees for lost or damaged materials will not be waived under this program and accounts placed with a collection agency are not eligible for the program.

Canned, boxed, or pre-packaged non-perishable goods that are unopened are acceptable.  No glass containers or expired food items will be accepted.  Food items will be collected at the Library’s Circulation Desk or on the bookmobiles.  All items collected will be given to a local food pantry, which always needs restocking at this time of year.

“This program provides a win-win situation for the library and our customers,” stated Cheryl Bornemann, Coordinator of Support Services.  “The library benefits by getting back long overdue and lost materials, as well as customers that we haven’t seen for sometime.  But more importantly, everybody has a chance to do a good deed by donating food for the hungry.”

Shop the BOOKCELLAR, the used bookstore operated by the Friends of the Fond du Lac Public Library for great bargains during its mid-winter sale days on Saturday, March 28, from 10 am - 2 pm.   The store is located on the lower level of the library at 32 Sheboygan Street. 

The BOOKCELLAR has a huge selection of inventory including adult and children’s hardcover and paperback books.   All hardcover books, except oversize, will sell for 50 cents each.  Music CDs, VHS tapes, and audio books will also sell for 50 cents. Money raised from the sale goes back to support the library.

Schools Back Then Program at FDL Public Library

Children, parents, and grandparents are invited to take a step back in time and find out what it was like going to school years ago.  “Going to School in Years Gone By,” will be presented at the Fond du Lac Public Library by Mary Ann Salter, Chairman of the FDL Historical Society Education Committee, on Sunday, March 22, from 1:30 pm to 2:15 pm.  This entertaining look into the past will feature many items from the Galloway House and Historic Village collections.  No registration is required for this free program. 

Beekeeping Program

The public is invited to learn the basic facts about bees and the fundamentals of beekeeping in the lower level meeting room at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Thursday, March 26 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Earl Jewett of Fond du Lac has been passionately working with bees for many years.  With the recent problems and nationwide loss of honeybee colonies, Earl will discuss how we can use our native Wisconsin Bumblebee for pollination services.  There will also be samples of honey harvested from Earl’s bee hives.  No registration is needed to attend this free program.

Art of Weaving Program

Curious about weaving?  This is the perfect event to attend to see if you might like this marvelous art form and hobby.  Learn all about spinning and weaving from Sara von Tresckow, owner of the Woolgatherers Ltd. LCC, located in Downtown Fond du Lac.  The program will take place in the lower level meeting room of the Fond du Lac Public Library on Saturday, March 28, from 10:00 am – Noon.  Sara has nearly 30 years experience as a weaver and spinner and has presented workshops nationwide.  Participants will have the opportunity to see the DutchMaster Travel loom in action which is produced by Sara and her husband, Hans.  No registration needed to attend this free program.

Trace the Genealogy of Your Home

The Fond du Lac Public Library will sponsor a free workshop on tracing the genealogy of your home in the lower level meeting room on Monday, March 30, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.  Have you ever wondered about the history of your home?  When it was built?  Who owned it?  What happened to the people who lived there?  Learning about your home and property can be a fascinating and fulfilling project.  FDLPL librarians will tell you everything you need to know to get started with your research.  Who knows what secrets you may uncover?  No registration is required.

Ellen Herre Greene Book Talk

Author Ellen Herre Greene will present a reading and book signing of her work Remember the Sweet Things at the Windhover Center for the Arts, 7:00  pm ,Wednesday, March 18. Coming to Fond du Lac gives Ellen a chance to visit her home town as part of a nation wide tour for her publisher, Harper Collins.

For twenty years, Ellen kept a running list of the thoughtful, funny, touching things that her husband, Marsh, said and did. She wrote them down secretly, and then shared those thoughts with him every Valentine's Day when he would find pages from her "Sweet Things List" tucked inside a card.

Married and divorced at a young age, Greene raised two small children alone. After another failed relationship in her late thirties, she swore she'd never again subject herself or her kids to men who treated them poorly. Then she met Marsh Greene.

In her beautiful tribute to a man and a marriage, Greene intersperses selections from her "Sweet Things List" with recollections from their years together. While her official home is still in San Pancho, Nayarit, Mexico where she lived with her husband, she now spends more time in San Jose, California, with her daughter and granddaughters. Ellen’s older brother, Tom Herre, is the City Manager for Fond du Lac.

The talk and book signing is sponsored by the Fond du Lac Public Library and FDL Arts Council. Refreshments are courtesy of Kremer Pharmacy whose owner, Mary Thompson, was a high school classmate of Greene’s. Books will be available for purchase the night of the sale with proceeds going to the Friends of the Fond du Lac Public Library.

National Flood Awareness Week Project

March 15-21

Children are invited to share their stories in words and art about their experiences surrounding the June 12^th, 2008, flooding in Fond du Lac.  How did you help your family, friends, and community after the flooding?  Clean up?  Donated clothing , toys, food, etc?  Entry forms can be picked up in the Children’s Room at the Fond du Lac Public Library and need to be returned to the library by March 21, 2009.

Enter the Teen Tech Week Contest

Teens in grades 6-12 are invited to enter the TEEN TECH TALK contest in celebration of TEEN TECH WEEK, March 9-14.  Teens will be challenged to unscramble 36 words that are all related to computers, gaming or personal gadgets.  Entries are available in the Children’s Room at the Library.  Deadline to enter is 6 pm on March 20^th.  Four winners will receive a $10 gift card for Gilles!

Registration Begins March 9 for Preschool Storytime

Registration for preschool storytime at the Fond du Lac Public Library begins Monday, March 9.   Storytimes meet in the Children’s Room once a week for five weeks from March 24 through April 23.  Listening to a story read aloud provides countless benefits to preschoolers.   It introduces the children to new words and experiences that will contribute to their success when they learn to read.  More importantly, it exposes listeners to the enjoyment that can be experienced from reading and exercises their imaginations.

The following storytime programs include stories, fingerplays, flannel board stories and songs.  To register, or for more information, please call the Children’s Room at 929-7080, ext. 127, or register online at www.FDLPL.org.

Laptime Storytime is for children 12-23 months old accompanied by an adult.  No siblings please.  The sessions are held on Thursdays from 9:30-9:50 am, or from 10:30-10:50 am.

2 X 2 Storytime is for two year olds accompanied by an adult.  Programs meet on Tuesday or Wednesday at 9:30-9:50 am.

Little Listeners is for children age 3, 4, and pre-K 5 years old.  Children may attend these programs without an adult.  Sessions are offered on Tuesday or Wednesday at 10:30 – 11:00 am.

Story Stars programs are for children age 3, 4 and pre-K 5 years old who are unable to attend the regular daytime sessions.  Storytimes are held on Wednesdays from 6:30 -7:00 pm.  Children may attend without an adult.

Storytime Sunday will be held from 1:30 -2:15 pm on the first Sunday of the month on April 5.  Families are invited to attend these fun storytime and craft programs.  No preregistration is necessary.  Preschoolers need to bring an adult.

Altered Art: Trash to Treasure Workshop for Teens

Young adults in grades 6-12 are invited to “go green” and create decorative artworks from a variety of recyclables such as old CDs and books.  The workshop, Altered Art: Trash to Treasure, will be held at the Fond du Lac Public Library on Saturday, March 14, from 1:00 – 3:00 pm in the lower level McLane Meeting Room.  The movie, Hoot, will also be shown.  Teens are encouraged to bring their old books, movies and CDs to swap with others.  Snacks will be provided at this free program.  For more information call 929-7080, ext. 127.
