Library to Extend Closing for Labor Day Holiday

Fond du Lac Public Library will be closed Friday, September 4, through Monday, September 7, for the Labor Day holiday. September 4 is one of three days of unpaid leave all staff are being asked to take in order to compensate for loss of revenue in 2009. July 2 was a day of unpaid leave as well as the upcoming New Year’s Eve holiday on Thursday, December 31.

The days of unpaid leave were scheduled for holiday weekends in part to lessen the impact of loss of service to the public. The Main Library, Festival Branch, and Bookmobile will all be closed these days. Book drops at the Main Library will remain open; though no material will become due on days the library is closed. Please do not return books on these days if you can avoid it. For more information call 929-7080

The following storytime programs include stories, fingerplays, flannel board stories and songs.  To register, or for more information, please call the Children’s Room at 929-7080, ext. 127, or register online at www.FDLPL.org.

Change in Library Card Policy

Recently the FDLPL Board of Trustees revised the circulation policy to require the signature of a parent/guardian for any new or renewed library card issued to a child 15 years of age and under.   For new cards, both parent and child must come to the library to complete an application which the parent must sign.  At this time the parent will need to provide proof of current address.

Card renewals will also require a parent/guardian visit to the library.  Renewals only take a few minutes.  Please note that effective September 1, 2009, children 15 and under whose cards have expired will not be able to check out materials until a parent/guardian’s signature is on file.  If you have any questions please call the Circulation Department at 929-7080, ext. 120, or email us at fdl-circulation@fdlpl.org

Exhibit Features Art from Four Generations of Sleder Family

painting of lighthouseA new art exhibit titled Strokes through Generations is currently on display in the library's Langdon Divers Community Gallery and will run through September 30th. The show features painting, drawing, and sculpture created by four generations of the Sleder family. The artists include Richard Sleder, Sr. of Fond du Lac; Richard Sleder of Madison, Mary Sleder, deceased mother of Richard Sr., and Anastasia Sleder, daughter of Richard. Richard started painting in watercolors and oils in his twenties and has studied art at UW-Madison and the Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, Russia. His daughter Anastasia received her art training in the historic Kolomna artists’ district in St. Petersburg. Mary (Trnka) Sleder, grandmother to Richard, had a talent for painting that got pushed aside while raising a family. She became inspired again at the age of 87 and spent the last year of her life painting small watercolor paintings. “My grandmother’s interest in art and most importantly her encouragement helped the proceeding three generations of her family pursue their own talent, “commented Richard. “My father, Richard Sr., does not have any formal art training but after retirement has renewed his interest in painting. My hope is that this exhibit will illustrate the story of how art brought four generations of family together, when we were worlds apart, and as a result added a great deal of richness to our lives, “ added Richard. Email Addresses are Needed!

Have you updated your email lately?  Giving the library your email address saves us a great deal of money we can spend on new material rather than postage.  Having your email even allows us to send you a courtesy notice when your books are about to become overdue.  That saves you money too.  We never share email addresses with others.  In fact, we are prohibited by state law from doing so.

Unfortunately many people don’t think to give us their email or forget to update their records when addresses change.  Please do us and yourself a favor, give us your email and keep us posted if your address changes.  Thank you!

Learn more about the Eifel area in Germany where many Fond du Lac County “Holyland” ancestors lived.  In the 19th century many German-speaking Catholics from small farming villages in the Eifel area of what was then Rhenish Prussia immigrated to east central Wisconsin.  Find out what this area in Germany is like today and discover why those immigrants came to the “Holyland” area.  No registration necessary.  Free and open to the public.  For more information call 929-7080.

Presenters:

Karl-Josef Tonner is a specialist in genealogy from the Eifel area and has written a number of books on this topic. He hopes to help people from the Fond du Lac area make connections to their ancestry and learn their stories.

Hermann Lehmann is the chairman of the local museum in Adenau Germany.

Arnhild Wöste is a teacher from Warburg, who has often traveled to Wisconsin and has assisted families in making connections to their German ancestors.

What may surprise us in Wisconsin is that people today in Germany are also very interested in the emigration that connects our two countries. The people who live in Eifel now would like to learn more about where their relatives settled and how their descendants live today.
