Patriotic Art Exhibit and Wall of Memory on Display at Library

U.S. flag

An exhibit of patriotic artwork created by high school students is on display at the Fond du Lac Public Library through May 30.  South Shore Chorale sponsored the exhibit as part of their spring concert, “An American Salute.”  The concert was a musical tribute to the men and women in our Armed Forces.  Six Fond du Lac County High Schools participated in the exhibit.

In addition, the Chorale initiated a campaign to put together a “Wall of Memory” featuring the names of over 1,000 Fond du Lac County soldiers who lost their lives during the Civil War, WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, on the U.S.S. Liberty, U.S.S. Cole, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.  The display will also be on exhibit at the library through May 30 and is located on the first floor near the Help Desk.

MAYFLOWER SOCIETY MAKES DONATION TO LIBRARY

Fond du Lac Public Library will be receiving an important addition to its Genealogy Collection.  On May 19, at 2 pm in the Seefeld Conference Room, Dr. Ralph Marshall Colburn, of the Society of Mayflower Descendants in the State of Wisconsin, will present the library with a thirty volume set of the “Mayflower Families Through Five Generations: Descendants of the Pilgrims Who Landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts”.  The presentation will be in memory of Leila Abigail Janes, former FDL Public Library director, 1918 -1957.  Miss Janes’ niece, Mrs. Ruth Taylor Colburn and great nephew, Dr. Ralph Marshall Colburn, both members of the Wisconsin Mayflower Society, will be present for the event.  This will be one of the most complete sets of this valuable genealogical resource currently available in the state.  The library will be receiving additional volumes as they are published.

More than one hundred years ago, a group of descendants of the Pilgrims who sailed on the Mayflower saw the need for a national society to honor their memory.  The Society of Mayflower Descendants is a hereditary organization comprised of a diverse group of individuals who have documented their descent from one or more of the 102 passengers who arrived on the Mayflower in 1620 at what is now Plymouth, Massachusetts.  Today there are tens of millions of individuals descended from these Pilgrims.  It is the goal of the Mayflower Society to join together people who share this heritage and to carry on the memory of our Pilgrim ancestors.  To find out more about the Society, visit their website at: http://www.mayflower.org.
