REFERENCE USA WORKSHOP OFFEREDwoman at computer

The Library subscribes to the Reference USA Business Directory, an online database of more than 13 million businesses.  This resource can be accessed from the library’s webpage: www.FDLPL.org   It is a valuable tool for businesses, job seekers, and researchers. Users can search for a business by yellow page heading, number of employees, sales volume and many other search options.

For each business listed, the database will not only provide the telephone number, address, and driving directions, but it often lists the number of employees, estimated annual sales, credit rating, SIC code, yellow page spending, square footage of the business, hours of operation, names of key personnel, company news, competitors report, UCC filings and much more.

A representative from Reference USA will be providing a free pizza lunch training session for anyone interested in learning more about this resource.  The one hour session will be on Friday, February 22 at 12:00 Noon in the McLane Meeting Room on the lower level of the library.  Please register online at: http://calendar.fdlpl.org/eventcalendar.asp or call the Reference Desk at (920) 929-7080 option 4.

Get on the Banner Wagon, WITH “KITES OVER MAIN STREET

red kite

Calling artists of every age: The Fond du Lac Public Library wants you to help decorate downtown and celebrate reading with “Kites Over Main Street.” The library is looking for 30 creative designs that will be made into kite-shaped banners for downtown Fond du Lac. The banners would fly during March to celebrate the Fond du Lac Reads 2008 book selection, “The Kite Runner,” by Khaled Hosseini.  The book is about a boy growing up in Afghanistan just prior to the Soviet invasion.  FDL  Reads aims to get as many people as possible to read the same book at the same time.

The kite banner design project is open to everyone, and there is no charge to participate. Families and community groups are encouraged to participate.

Anyone who would like to submit a kite design can pick up the template – the design must be of a certain shape and size – and the guidelines at the Fond du Lac Public Library, 32 Sheboygan St., or the Windhover Center for the Arts, 51 Sheboygan St., starting Friday, January 25. Deadline for finished designs is February 8.

The FDL Reads committee will select the 30 most creative kite designs and will have them made into downtown streetlight banners.

Participants may create their kite designs at home or they can register for a free Family Kite Decorating Workshop at the Windhover Center for the Arts at either 1:00 p.m. or 3:00 p.m., Saturday, February 9. Kite templates, markers, crayons, and other materials will be supplied at the workshops. Participants are encouraged to register in advance by calling (920) 921-5410.

All submitted banners will be displayed and the 30 winning entries announced at the “The Kite Runner Bazaar” kickoff celebration 6:30 p.m. Friday, February 29, at the UW-FDL Commons. A drawing will be held among all the participants for three special awards. All participants and the public are invited. There is no entry fee.  Middle Eastern appetizers and beverages will be available for sale.
