EXHIBITS COMING SOON……..

A Photo History of the Library

Then and Now: a Photo History of the Fond du Lac Public Library will be on exhibit in the Langdon Divers Community Gallery at the library from September 1 – 27.  The display is a visual history of the library from 1876 to present.  The photographs are taken from the library’s archives.   From a collection of 1,427 books in 1877, to a collection of more than 200,000 items today, the library has changed dramatically over the past 130 years.  The public is invited to take a step back in time and learn about the rich history of one of our community’s most valuable resources.

As a compliment to the exhibit, a display of Wisconsin library memorabilia from the collection of Larry T. Nix will also be in the gallery.   In the last part of the 19th century and in the first two decades of the 20th century an explosion of library construction took place in Wisconsin.  This construction boom was fostered to a large extent by Andrew Carnegie and other philanthropists.  The new library buildings were a source of civic pride and as such were represented on a variety of souvenir items including china, spoons, paperweights, and picture postcards.  This display includes examples of these  items and others which reflect the library heritage of Wisconsin.

Nix, a library history buff, retired as Director of Public Library Development for the State of Wisconsin in 2003 after 23 years of service with that agency.  He created “The Library History Buff” website at http://www.libraryhistorybuff.org/  which promotes appreciation of library history.
