FDL Reads 2007: Fahrenheit 451

Fond du Lac Reads is a series of programs designed to get as many people in the county as possible to read the same book at the same time. Our goal is to foster community by providing a forum for public discussion and interaction. – And most of all, demonstrate that reading can be fun!  A copy of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 is waiting for you at your public library.  Following is a preview of a few upcoming programs you won’t want to miss:

Dr. Elizabeth BuchananPreserving the Freedom to Read – Thursday, March 29
Eugene G. McLane Meeting Room, FDLPL, 7:00 p.m.

Dr. Elizabeth Buchanan, from UW-Milwaukee School of Information Science, will lead a discussion of the censorship in Wisconsin from a historical perspective. What has changed in the way groups or individuals attempt to censor public information? How can we preserve freedom of information and ideas? Join Dr. Buchanan for a lively discussion. Refreshments served.
This presentation will be available as a podcast from www.fdlpl.org within 48 hours of the program.

 Book Discussions: Fahrenheit 451

Fahrenheit 451 is a short novel, yet it touches on many topics – government control of our lives, the impact of the media, the “dumbing down” of society, censorship, the impact on technology on society. What does this novel written 50 years ago have to say to us today? Join in one, or all, of the discussions listed below.

Thursday, March 22
Covenant United Methodist Church, 20 N Marr St, 7:00 p.m.
Long-time Fond du Lac Public Library Reference Supervisor Kay Conrad will lead a lively discussion of the book. Refreshments served.

Dr. Paisley HarrisFriday, March 30

Sandra Seefeld is the daughter of the late Bernice and Robert Seefeld of Van Dyne.  The library receives generous support from a charitable trust established by Ms. Seefeld’s parents.  The local history room on the second floor of the remodeled library is named in their honor.

"My first appearance at New York City’s Carnegie Hall was on Friday the 13th and all went well.  I am expecting my experience in Fond du Lac to be as enjoyable on April, Friday the 13th," said Sandra.

Sandra and Ron Matson have been performing together for 30 years including two programs in New York and tours to Germany, Austria, Luxembourg, Finland, and England.   Sandra will retire in May after 30 years of teaching at the Miami University.  She was the Miami Wind Quintet flutist for 21 years, was principal flutist for the Echternach Festival Ensemble in Luxembourg for 15 years, and has played with the Ft.
